La Lune

written by music: Frank Peterson lyrics: Anna-Lena Strasse

This song only features on the US release of La Luna

Sous les nuages de la nuit
je marche Vers la clairière
d’un éclat argenté je la vois
la lune

Elle porte les voiles de
l’éternité
son auréole embrasse
les étoiles, ma lune

English Translation

Under the clouds of the night
I walk towards the clearing
I a silvery burst, I see it
The moon

It wears the veils of
Eternity
Its halo embrace
the stars, my moon

Winter In July

written by music: Tim Simenon, Guy Sigsworth lyrics: Loretta Heywood

This song is originally by Bomb The Bass and appears on their 1991 album Unknown Territory.

This song only features on the US release of La Luna

Look around wounder why
We can live a life that’s never satisfied
Lonely hearts troubled minds
Loking for a way that we can never find
Many roads are ahead of us
With choices to be made
But life’s just one of the games we play
There is no special way
Make the best of what’s given you
Everything will come in time
Why deny yourself
Don’t just let life pass you by
Like winter in July

Future dreams can never last
When you find yourself still living in the past
Keep moving on to higher ground
Looking for the way you thought could not be found
We may not know the reason why
We’re born into this world
Where a man only lives to die
His story left untold
Make the best of what’s given you
Everything will come in time
Why deny yourself
Don’t just let life pass you by
Like winter in July

And we may not know the reason why
We’re born into this world
Where a man only live to die
And his story left untold
So make the best of what’s given you
Everything will come in time
Why deny yourself
Don’t just let life pass you by
Like winter in July

Scarborough Fair

written by traditional, adapted by Peterson

Scarborough (UK) was granted a market charter in 1253 by King Henry III. The markets started on the 15th August and the event ran for 45 days. This meant merchants from all over Europe (and even further afield) travelled to trade in the town. This is probably the fair that the song is about, as the event was so large entertainers attended, giving the perfect opportunity for songs to be written.

Here is a great website dedicated to the history of this traditional song –
http://www.scarborough-fair.de.vu/scarborough.htm

This song has been covered by many artists over the years.

Sarah also sings this song on film at the Minack Theatre near Penzance, Cornwall in the film Zeit der Erkenntnis.

Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
Remember me to one who lives there
He once was a true love of mine

Tell him to make me a cambric shirt
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
Without no seams nor needle work
Then he’ll be a true love of mine

Tell him to find me an acre of land
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
Between salt water and the sea strands
Then he’ll be a true love of mine

Tell him to reap it with a sickle of leather
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
And gather it all in a bunch of heather
Then he’ll be a true love of mine

Are you going to Scarborough Fair?
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
Remember me to one who lives there
He once was a true love of mine

Figlio Perduto

Written by music: Ludwig van Beethoven, adapted by Soltau lyrics: Chiara Ferraù

This piece of music is taken from Beethoven’s Allegretto of Beethoven’s 7th symphony.

Muri die vento Notte è scesa
Padre e figlio sono insiem

Con un cavallo Vanno avanti
In questa grande oscurità

Ma ad un tratto Il bimbo trema
Dall paura Freddo si fa

Padre oh padre Tu non hai visto
Re degli elfi Eccolo la

Figlio perduto, Vuoi far un gioco?
Gioia ti porto Vieni con me

Padre oh padre Hai già sentito
Cosa mi dice E che vuol’ far’?

Figlio perduto Se tu non vieni
Io userò la forza che ho

Padre oh padre Re degli elfi
Mi sta toccando Male mi fa

E il bambino, Con occhi chiusi
Lui non si muove Perso è già

Figlio Figlio perduto
Se tu non vieni Io userò la mia forza

English Translation

Walls of wind Night has fallen
Father and son are together

With a horse They proceed
Through this intense darkness

But suddenly The boy trembles
With fear It gets cold

Father oh father Haven’t you seen
The king of the elfs There he is

Lost son Do you want to play?
I bring you joy Come with me

Father oh father Did you hear
What he said And what he will do?

Lost son If you don’t come with me
I will use the power that I have

Father oh father The king of the elfs
Is touching me He hurts me

And the boy Eyes closed
He doesn’t move He’s already lost

Son Lost son If you don’t come with me
I will use my power

A Whiter Shade of Pale

written by music: Matthew Fisher & Gary Brooker lyrics: Keith Reid

This song was originally written by Procol Harum and appeared on their 196 album. Part of the melody is based on the Johann Sebastian Bach’s Cantata 140, also known as Sleepers Awake.

Sarah also releases this as a single of various remixes along with the song Question of Honour.  This song only features on the US release of La Luna

We skipped the light Fandango
And turned cartwheels across the floor
I was feeling kind of seasick
But the crowd called out for more
The room was humming harder
As the ceiling flew away
When we called out for another drink
The waiter brought a tray

And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face at first just ghostly
Turned a whiter shade of pale

She said “There is no reason…
And the truth is plain to see”
But I wandered through my playing cards
And would not let her be
One of sixteen vestal virgins
Who were leaving for the coast
And although my eyes were open
They might just as well have been closed

And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face at first just ghostly
Turned a whiter shade of pale

Tu non credere perche
Questa crudelta di padroni
Ha visto in me
Solo una cagna che
Mi mett’ anch’ Io alla tua catena

Se attraverso la città
Questa ipocrita, tua citta
Il corpo mio
Che passa tra di voi
Eun invettiva contro la viltà

Tu ritroverai con me
La pì splendida proprietà
Un attimo di sole sopra noi
Alla ricerca di te

English Translation

Don’t believe, because The cruelty or proprietors Has seen in me
Just a dog which Puts itself at your chain

When I cross the city This hypocrite, your city My mind Which passes through both of you Is an insult at cowardice

You will find again The most splendid possession A moment of sun above us
In search of you

This Love

written by Craig Armstrong / Jerry Burns

This song appears on Craig Armstrong’s album titled The Space Between Us, released in 1998.  Craig Armstrong original version featuring Liz Fraser

This love This love is a strange love
A faded kind of day love This love

This love I think I’m gonna fall again
And even when you held my hand
It didn’t mean a thing This love

This love Never has to say love
Doesn’t know it is love This love

This love Doesn’t have to say love
Doesn’t need to be love
Doesn’t mean a thing
This love This love

She Doesn’t See Him / He Doesn’t See Me

Written by music & lyrics: Goldman / Romanelli English lyrics: Read / Ingebrigsten / Marazzi / Adams

The song is originally in French taken from the film Astérix et Obélix contre César. The band A1 they took the French song, changed and translated the lyrics and finished up with “She Doesn’t See Me”.

Sarah changed the song – so the US and European versions are different – as you can see below.  She Doesn’t See Him appears on the European version  He Doesn’t See Me appears on the US version

When she passes him by
She’s a ray of light
Like the first drop of sun
From the sky
And he knows she’s a queen
Who deserves a king
But he is not a king
And she doesn’t see him

When she dances
She moves him to a smile
He sees everything
Near her shine
There’s a grace in her ways
That he can’t contain
He has not that grace
Oh, he has not that grace

And the closer he gets
He can’t help but hide
So ashamed
Of his body and voice
There are boundaries
We pass in spite of the war
But our own
We can’t seem to cross

He has a way that surrounds him
So delicate
With a glory that reigns in his life
He is also so much that he is not
These things they don’t see
And she doesn’t see him
Oh-oh-oh …
And she doesn’t see him

There are things we can change
If we just choose to fight
But the walls of injustice are high

When she passes him by
She’s a ray of light
Like the first drop of sun
From the sky
And he knows she’s a queen
Who deserves a king
Someone other than him
So different from him

Oh-oh-oh …
She doesn’t see him
Oh-oh-oh …
She doesn’t see him
She doesn’t see him
When he passes me by
He’s a ray of light
Like the first drop of sun
From the sky
And I know he’s a king
Who deserves a queen
But I’m not a queen
And he doesn’t see me

When he dances
He moves me to a smile
And I see everything

There’s a grace in his ways

I haven’t that grace
Oh, I haven’t that grace

And the closer he gets
I can’t help but hide
So ashamed
Of my body and voice
There are boundaries

But our own
We can’t seem to cross

She has a way that surrounds her
So delicate
With a glory that reigns in her life
She is also so much that she is not
These things I can’t see
‘Cause he doesn’t see me
Oh-oh-oh …
And he doesn’t see me

There are things we can change
If we just choose to fight
But the walls of injustice are high

written by: Music and lyrics: Dido Armstrong / Paul Stratham / Pascal Gabriel

This song is originally by Dido and appears on her fist album No Angel.

I didn’t hear you leave I wonder how am I still here I don’t want to move a thing It might change my memory

Oh I am what I am I’ll do what I want But I can’t hide

I won’t go I won’t sleep I can’t breathe Until you’re resting Here with me I won’t leave I can’t hide I cannot be

Until you’re resting Here with me

I don’t want to call my friends They might wake me From this dream And I don’t wanna leave this bed Risk forgetting all that’s been

Oh I am what I am I’ll do what I want But I can’t hide

How Fair This Place / Spot

written by Music: Sergei Rachmaninov) Lyrics: G. Galina

This song comes from Op. 21, no. 7.  This song is in Russian and as it’s difficult to show the Russian alphabet, so I’ve just added the English Translation.

It is beautiful here…
Look, in the distance
The river sparkles like fire,
The meadows are lying like a coloured carpet,
The clouds are growing white.

There are no people here…
There is just silence here…
Only God and I are here.
Flowers, and an old pine tree,
And you, my daydream!

Hijo de la Luna

written by José Maria Cano

This song is originally written and performed by Mecano – the lead singer is a good friend of Sarah’s and Sarah has covered a few of their songs on various albums. Mecano have also recorded this in French – Dis moi lune d’argent and in italian Figlio della Luna.  Clips of which you can hear below.

Tonto el que no entienda
Cuenta una leyenda
Que una hembra gitana
Conjuró a la luna
Hesta el amanecer
Llorando pedia
Al llegar el dia
Desposar un cale
Tendras a tu hombre
Piel morena
Desde el cielo
Hablo la luna llena
Pero a cambio quiero
El hijo primero
Que le engendres a el
Que quien su hijo inmola
Para no estar sola
Poco le iba a querer

Luna quieres ser madre
Y no encuentras querer
Que te haga mujer
Dime luna de plata
Qué pretendes hacer
Con un nino de piel
A-ha-ha, a-ha-ha
Hijo de la luna

De padre canela
Nació un nino
Blanco como el lomo
De un armino

Con los ojos grises
En vez de aceituna
Nino albino de luna
Maldita su estampa
Este hijo es de un payo
Y yo no me lo cayo
Y yo no me lo cayo
Gitano al creerse deshonrado
Se fue a su mujer
Cuchillo en mano
De quien es el hijo?

Me has enganao fijo
Y de muerte la hirio
Luego se hizo al monte
Con el nino en brazos
Y alli le abandono

Luna quieres ser madre
Y no encuentras querer
Que te haga mujer
Dime luna de plata
Qué pretendes hacer
Con un nino de piel
A-ha-ha, a-ha-ha
Hijo de la luna

Y en las noches
Que haya luna llena
Sera porque el nino
Este de buenas
Y si el nino llora
Menguara la luna
Para hacerle una cuna
Y si el nino llora
Menguara la luna para
Harcerle una cuna

English Translation

Foolish who doesn’t understand
Tells a legend
That a gypsy woman
Conjured to the moon until sunrise
Crying she was asking
Coming the day
To marry a gypsy man

You you have your man of dark skin
From heaven spoke the full moon
But in return I want
The first son
That you beget from him
Whoever sacrifices his son
Not to be alone
Would barely love him

Chorus:
Moon wants to be mother
And you don’t find a lover
Who can make you woman
Tell me silver moon
what do you expect to do
with a kid of skin
Son of the moon

From a cinnamon father a boy was born
White as the back of an ermine
With the eyes grey
Instead of olive
Albino boy of moon
Damn his stamp
This son is from a non-gipsy
And I won’t shut up

Chorus

Gypsy man believing himself dishonored
Went to his woman knife in hand
Who’s son is this?
You’ve cheated on me, for sure
And he hurted her to dead
Then he went to the mount
With the kid in his arms
And he abandoned him there

Chorus

And in the nights with full moon
It will be because the kid is in a good mood
Aand if the boy cries
The moon will lessen
To make him a cradle
And if the boy cries
The moon will lessen
To make him a cradle

Gloomy Sunday

written by music: Reszõ Seress lyrics: László Jávor / Sam M. Lewis

This song seems to have a bad reputation – it’s known as the Hungarian suicide song, although whether it really deserves that title is doubtful. The writer of the song committed suicide in 1968, but if you read the last verse – it ends on a happier note – Dreaming, I was only dreaming I wake and I find you asleep . . .
I’ll let you judge for yourselves – web links below.
http://www.phespirit.info/gloomysunday/article_01.htm & http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gloomy_Sunday

Sunday is gloomy
My hours are slumber less
Dearest the shadows
I live with are numberless
Little white flowers
Will never awaken you
Not where the black coach
Of sorrow has taken you
Angels have no thoughts
Of ever returning you
Would they be angry
If I thought of joining you?
Gloomy Sunday

Gloomy is Sunday
With shadows I spend it all
My heart and I
Have decided to end it all
Soon there’ll be candles
And prayers that are said I know
But let them not weep
Let them know that I’m glad to go
Death is no dream
For in death I’m caressing you
With the last breath of my soul
I’ll be blessing you
Gloomy Sunday

Dreaming, I was only dreaming
I wake and I find you asleep
In the deep of my heart here
Darling I hope
That my dream never haunted you
My heart is telling you
How much I wanted you
Gloomy Sunday

La Luna

written by music: Antonín Dvorák adapted by Frank Peterson lyrics: Chiara Ferraù

Scende la notte, tranquillità
Piano il buio respira
Solo la luna veglierà
Con argento ci coprirà
Dal grande cielo splenderà
Solo la luna veglierà

La luna della notte
Dolcemente ci proteggerà
La luna della notte
Dolcemente ci proteggerà

Scende la notte, e lei è la
Su tutto’l cielo lei regna
Con gentilezza lel guarderà
Illuminando la sera
Con gentilezza lel guarderà
Illuminando la sera

La luna della notte
Dolcemente ci proteggerà
La luna della notte
Dolcemente ci proteggerà

Luna non veglierà
Fuggirà
Luna scomparirà

English Translation

The night falls, silence
The darkness breathes quietly
Just the moon will be awake
It will cover us with silver
It will shine from the great sky
Just the moon will be awake

The moon of the night
Will sweetly protect us
The moon of the night
Will sweetly protect us

The night falls, and it is there
It reigns over the whole sky
It will watch us with kindness
Illuminating the evening
It will watch us with kindness
Illuminating the evening

The moon of the night
Will sweetly protect us
The moon of the night
Will sweetly protect us

The moon will not be awake
It will flee
The moon will vanish

Moon River (hidden track)

written by:- music: Henry Mancini lyrics: Johnny Mercer

This song is from the movie Breakfast At Tiffany’s starring Audrey Hepburn, and based on a novel by Truman Capote, with the original music written by Henry Mancini. In the movie it is sung by Audrey.

In her BBC Radio 2 chat with Elaine Paige – Sarah chooses in her Essential Musical – Breakfast at Tiffanys and the song Moon River.

Appears on the US version

Moon river, wider than a mile,
I’m crossing you in style, some day.
Oh, dream maker, you heart breaker,
Wherever you’re goin’, I’m goin’ your way.
Two drifters, off to see the world,
There’s such a lot of world to see.
We’re after the same rainbow’s end,
Waitin’ ’round the bend,
My huckleberry friend,
Moon river, and me!

First of May

written by Barry, Maurice, and Robin Gibb

Written and recorded by the Bee Gees and appears on their 1969 album Odessa.

Sarah first of all sang this at Christmas In Vienna, it then was a bonus track on her eden single, and Sarah sang this at her One Night In Eden concerts.

Appears on the European version

When I was small, and Christmas trees were tall,
we used to love while others used to play.
Don’t ask me why, but time has passed us by,
someone else moved in from far away.

Now we are tall, and Christmas trees are small,
and you don’t ask the time of day.
But you and I, our love will never die,
but guess who’ll cry come first of May.

The apple tree that grew for you and me,
I watched the apples falling one by one.
And as I recall the moment of them all,
the day I kissed your cheek and you were gone.

Now we are tall, and Christmas trees are small,
and you don’t ask the time of day.
But you and I, our love will never die,
but guess who’ll cry come first of May.

When I was small, and Christmas trees were tall,
do do do do do do do do do …
Don’t ask me why, but time has passed us by,
someone else moved in from far away.
